It was released in 1998 and stars Shah Rukh Khan in the title role. The story is loosely based on the short story "Devdas" by Upendranath Biswas which was written in 1914. The protagonist is an Indian man who leaves his wife for another woman only to repent his decision later, but inevitably dies before he can return to her or marry her. First released with music by A. R. Rahman in the same year and with lyrics by Javed Akhtar in 2002. The film, which was made over a period of 3 years with a budget of $3 million, was extremely well received and is considered a cult classic. It also remains one of the most expensive Hindi films to date. The film won several awards which included Best Film (Critics) at the 50th Filmfare Awards, Best Male Playback Singer for Udit Narayan from Filmfare's Critics Award for Best Male Playback Singer along with winning eight out of fourteen nominations it had received at various award ceremonies around the world, making it one of India's highest-grossing films up until that point. The soundtrack of "Devdas" was composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar. When the film was made, the soundtrack was supposed to be composed by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan; but due to his death, A.R. Rahman was called to compose the tracks of the album after he had already scored some tracks for his film "Jeans".Shabana Azmi's rendition of Tum Aise nahee from the movie "Arth" (1982), is used in this movie during Devdas' (Shah Rukh Khan) "spiritual journey" sequence (when he visits Chanderi). The song is in the original version in "Arth", except in this movie, where it is sung in Hindi.The song "Saregama" has been adapted into a dance number by choreographers Shankar Mahadevan and Shiamak Davar. The film was released on 1 May 1998 to positive reviews from critics and went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of the year. It was certified full house at the Indian box office, taking $3 million (57 crore) at the box office. The film was released in the UK and the USA in November 2013, to positive reviews. The film won several awards and nominations at many award ceremonies. It won six Filmfare Awards (including Best Film and Best Director) and twelve IIFA Awards (including Best Movie and Best Director). It received fourteen nominations at various award ceremonies around the world.
